There are two types of alpacas, a Huacaya and a Suri and the best way to tell them apart is that the Huacaya alpacas are like big fluffy teddy bears and the Suri alpacas have long, shiny locks. We chose the Huacaya alpacas because the wool they produce is easier to handle while spinning.
Cria - an alpaca less than one year old
Dam - Female parent alpaca
Maiden Female - Female alpaca who has not been bred
Open Female - Female who is not yet pregnant
Sire - Male parent alpaca
Stud - Male alpaca used to breed
Yearling - An alpaca between the age of 1 year and 2 years.
